What are freckles?
- Freckles are pale brown spots less than 5 mm in diameter with poorly defined margins.
- They are first noticed during childhood and are common in fair-skinned individuals.
- Usually occurring on the face, they darken on sun exposure.
- They are caused by an increased amount of melanin in the pigment cells. The number of pigment cells is normal.
How are freckles treated?
- Avoidance of sunlight exposure will help to reduce pigmentation.
- One should avoid the sun as much as possible and use sunscreen regularly.
- The sunscreen should have a SPF (sun protection factor) of greater than 15.
- Camouflage make-up may be used.
- Freckles may sometimes respond to chemical peels and laser ablation.
