Assessment of a new skin brightening emulgel containing glycolic acid, lactic acid, kojic acid, arbutin and UVA/UVB filters in females with melasma
Inclusion Criteria
- 35 patients consisting of women aged 25 to 40
- Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV
- stable melasma of epidermal or mixed types
Methods
- Treatment was applied every morning for 30 days
- Evaluation was done at day 0 (baseline) and after 30 days:
- Clinical assessment with MASI (Melasma Area Severity Index)
- Instrumental evaluation (Visioface)
Results
- MASI showed reduction by 42% (2.69 to 1.69)
- Instrumental evaluation showed reduction of 11 % of brown spots and 32.7% of UV spots
- The treatment was well tolerated
Comment: the authors mention that “a few” (proportion non specified) episodes of skin discomfort irritation and burning of mild intensity were present and that this was attributed to the use of alpha-hydroxya acids (AHAs). However irritation for treating melasma (chloasma) (pregnancy mask) may add post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
