MST – Définition
How is a Sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosed ?
- Blood and urine samples enable to detect common STIs (Chlamydial infections, HIV, Gonorrhoea (Gonorrhea), Syphilis).
- However, local sampling on the skin and mucous membranes and of discharge fluides according to the guidance of the doctor (physician) will confirm the diagnosis.
Can all STIs be cured ?
- It is important to treat all STIs. Treatment as well as prevention will help avoid infection transmission and avoid the complication of the STI.
- STIs of bacterial origin can be cured if they are treated early.
- STIs of viral origin can be treated, but as of today cannot be cured.
How to treat a STI ?
- Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics.
- Viral infections are treated with antiviral drugs.
- Parasitic infections are treated with antiparasitic drugs.
- Therefore, we cannot treat STIs with a single drug (combining them carries the risk of serious cumulative side effects). It is therefore of paramount importance to have a diagnosis before undergoing treatment.
